Why Essential Nutrients Matter for Healing
Your body requires the right nutritional building blocks to function at its best.
Vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and essential fatty acids play important roles throughout the body. They are involved in countless processes that support normal cellular function, energy production, brain function, metabolism, and overall health.
In this week’s Neuro-Biomedicine educational video, Dr. James Farley explains why providing the body with the nutrients it requires is an important part of creating a strong foundation for health.
Your Body Needs the Right Building Blocks
Think about trying to connect two boards without having a nail.
You may know exactly what needs to be done, but without the necessary material, you can’t complete the job.
Your body works in a similar way.
Certain vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids, and other nutrients are essential because the body requires them for normal biological processes. When nutritional needs aren’t being adequately met, normal physiological function can be affected.
Nutrition Is Part of the Foundation
Nutrition isn’t simply about taking supplements. It begins with understanding what the body requires and providing those nutrients through an appropriate diet.
Dr. Farley discusses looking at both:
The foods you’re consuming
and
The nutrients your body requires
Rather than assuming everyone needs exactly the same thing, nutritional needs can also be considered in the context of the individual.
Medications & Nutrients
Another topic Dr. Farley discusses is the relationship between medications and nutritional status.
Certain medications can affect the absorption, metabolism, utilization, or excretion of specific nutrients. This doesn’t mean medications should simply be discontinued. Instead, medication use can be one of many factors worth considering when evaluating someone’s overall nutritional status.
Are More Vitamins Always Better?
No.
Although vitamins and minerals are essential for normal health, the goal isn’t simply to take as many supplements as possible.
Nutritional needs vary, and excessive amounts of certain vitamins and minerals can cause adverse effects or interact with medications.
The objective is to identify and provide appropriate nutritional support based on the individual’s needs.
Creating a Better Foundation for Health
Dr. Farley’s message in this week’s video is ultimately about giving the body the resources it requires to function.
That means looking at nutrition as part of a much larger picture:
Food • Essential Nutrients • Brain Function • Cellular Function • Metabolism • Individual Needs
By improving that foundation, the goal is to support the body’s normal physiological processes and its ability to maintain and restore healthy function.
