What Functional Neurology Looks At
Standard neurology is very good at diagnosis. It names the condition, rules out the dangerous causes and matches medication to the label. That is important work and it is not what this office duplicates. Functional neurology picks up after the diagnosis. The question is not what to call the condition, it is which parts of the nervous system are underperforming, why, and what can still be influenced. Two people carrying the same Parkinson's diagnosis can present with completely different balance, gait, autonomic and cognitive findings, and they need different care. That is why the evaluation here runs longer than most patients expect, and why the plan that comes out of it is built around the person rather than the label.What an Evaluation Includes
A first visit is an evaluation, not a treatment. Depending on how you present, it can include:- A detailed history covering onset, progression, prior testing and how you responded to medication
- Neurological examination of cranial nerve function, eye movement, balance, coordination and gait
- Autonomic screening, since blood pressure regulation, digestion and sleep are often involved well before the more visible symptoms appear
- Review of existing imaging and lab work, with additional metabolic testing when the history calls for it
- A written explanation of what was found and what can reasonably be influenced

Functional Neurology and Functional Medicine
Patients search for both terms, and the office is asked regularly whether they are the same thing. They overlap. Functional medicine looks at metabolic, hormonal, digestive and immune contributors to how a person feels. Functional neurology looks at how the nervous system itself is performing.
